Do You Need a Boating License to Rent a Pontoon?

Florida has no boating “license,” but anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must carry a Boating Safety Education ID card (or an accepted equivalent) to drive a boat with 10 horsepower or more. That includes a rented pontoon. If your driver was born before 1988, no card is required.

Who Has to Carry the Boater Card?

The rule is about the person at the wheel, not every passenger. Only the driver needs to qualify.

  • Born on or after Jan 1, 1988: needs the FWC Boating Safety Education ID card or an accepted equivalent
  • Born before 1988: no card required
  • The card is issued by the FWC after an approved boating safety course

What If Nobody in My Group Has a Card?

Florida offers alternatives such as a temporary certificate for renters. The rules change from time to time, so call us at 561-629-1108 before you book and we'll tell you what your driver needs for your date.

What Should the Driver Bring?

Bring a photo ID, and your boater card if you were born on or after January 1, 1988. Call ahead with any questions so check-in is quick.
