Boca Raton Boating Guide

Hillsboro Lighthouse by Boat

The Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse is one of the most iconic landmarks in South Florida. Here's how to see it from the water — the best route, photo tips, and timing.

A Quick History

Built in 1907, Hillsboro Lighthouse stands 136 feet over the inlet between Pompano Beach and Hillsboro Beach. Its second-order Fresnel lens makes it one of the brightest lighthouses on the East Coast.

Best Route from Boca

Cruise south on the Intracoastal past the mansion-lined Hillsboro Beach stretch. The lighthouse appears on your right as you approach the inlet — perfect afternoon photo light.

From Pompano or Deerfield

Even shorter — both are just minutes from the inlet. Time the visit for slack tide; the inlet itself can get choppy on outgoing tide with east wind.

Photo Tips

Late afternoon backlight is dramatic. For postcard sunsets, position the lighthouse to your west as the sun drops.

Make It a Loop

Combine the lighthouse with a Lake Boca sandbar afternoon and a sunset return for the perfect South Florida boating day.
